PU Punjab University Established in 1882 at Lahore, the University of the Punjab is the largest and the oldest seat of higher learning in Pakistan. It was the first to be established in the sub-continent in Muslim majority area.

The University strives to provide a conducive environment for the pursuit of the academic activities. Allama Iqbal Campus, named after the great South Asian thinker and mystic poet, with Islamic architectural design is in the middle of the bustling city of Lahore.
Quaid-i-Azam Campus, after the name of the father of the Nation, is located 12 kilometers to the South of Allama Iqbal Campus. Spread over an area of 1800 acres of lush green landscape, this campus is the centre of academic and administrative activities of the University. A canal dividing the academic blocks from the student lodgings and adds to the beauty of the campus.
The Punjab University PU has also a summer campus at Khanaspur, located at a height of about 7,000 ft. in the Himalayan range near Ayubia. This Campus, in addition to providing research facilities, is also used as a recreational centre for the faculty and the students.
The Punjab University PU has also started Sub-Campuses at Gujranwala and Jhelum, with four disciplines i.e. Business Administration, Commerce, Law and Information Technology. Few more disciplines will be added in near future.
The PU comprises of 5 Campuses, 13 Faculties, 10 Constituent Colleges, over 73 Departments, Centres, Institutes, and 658 affiliated colleges. It has 1006 full time and 300 part time faculty members involved in teaching/research and 45,678 on campus students. (27,907 Morning Students, 16,552 Evening Students and 1,219 Diploma Students).

 

  • The foundations of this multi-campus University were laid down by the British Colonial Authorities. It was the 4th largest institute of higher education established by the British Government in the subcontinent. The Punjab University was established as an educational reform in the repercussions of war of Independence (1857).
  • The University of Punjab was different from other Universities established by the British Government. The Punjab University was established as a teaching, examining and research institution, unlike the previously established institute which were only teaching institutes. The Punjab University served the educational requirements of the entire subcontinent till partition.

During the process of partition, the Punjab University was divided into two portions. The Indian Portion of the PU is situated in Chandigarh, India. Many major institutions that were previously affiliated to Punjab University have now become independent universities on their own, such as Government College University, Lahore and Medical and Engineering Colleges. The highly reputed institution is situated in the historically and culturally significant city of Lahore. The Punjab University has two campuses in Lahore. The Allama Iqbal Campus is colloquially known as the old campus is conveniently located at Lower Mall Road. Whereas the new Campus which is called Quaid-e-Azam Campus is situated at the Canal Bank Road, Lahore. Both the campuses are easily approachable.

The campus buildings have a state of the art infrastructure. The dignified buildings of the institute are surrounded by sprawling lush green gardens and equipped with latest facilities and technologies for the students. The multi-faceted campus of the University have spacious well-lit and well cross ventilated classrooms, halls and teaching centers.

The Highly reputed institution houses one of the largest libraries of Pakistan which is stocked with thousands of books, research articles and publications. Other facilities include gymnasium, sport complexes, sport grounds, common rooms, prayer rooms and masjids. Some of the distinguishing features of the University include separate cafeterias for each departments, digital library and resource centers.

The students are facilitated with a fleet of transport buses that ply between campus and various designated spots in the city. The transport service of PU can also be availed by students of nearby cities like Mureedkay and Kasur. The hostel services are also provided to the students for their ease and convenience.

The multi-disciplinary university has a wide array of course to offer to the students. The Punjab University is privileged to have one of the largest enrollment rate. The substantially large student body consists of 30,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral study programs. The long list of alumni include many well-known names and two Nobel laureates.

Punjab University Hostels

At present PU has 28 hostels, 17 for male and 11 for female students. Most of these students are accommodated in the hostels at the Quaid-e-Azam Campus. Total number of hostel residents is 6961.
To meet the growing need of accommodation for female students another girls hostel is under construction . Each hostel is looked after by a Warden and a Superintendent, who are generally members of the academic faculty. Management of the hostels is coordinated by the Chairman Hall Council, who is a senior faculty member.
For Staff
On-campus housing facilities include 89 houses for teachers and University officers and 249 houses for junior staff of the University. About forty houses and eighty single accommodations are available in the various student hostels that are occupied by Wardens, Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents. The University plans to build more houses for the academic faculty and other employees. Three bachelor teacher’s hostels provide accommodation to the younger members of the academic staff. A guesthouse within the Residential Colony and the guestrooms in the Student-Teacher Center provide accommodation to the academics visiting the University.

Punjab University Library

The PU library remained in its old building upto 1988 and in the same year it was shifted to its present two storied building. The total area of library is 1,02,000 sq. feet with a basement of 10,000 sq. feet. It started functioning with the purchased collection of Sir Donald Macleod’s 2000 volumes, and it boasts a book collection of 550,000, which includes 25,000 manuscripts, 300 Foreign & local Journals, 25,000 online full text forign journals and 65200 bound volumes of national and international research journals covering various discipline taught in the University.
This prestigious library has more than 50,000 volumes of old documents published during the later half of 19th and first two decades of 21st century. The library has 1750 microfilms of rare material. It is a depositary library for the UNO publications. It has more than 25000 members comprising of faculty members, students and other researchers of the Punjab University and its affiliated colleges.
In addition, each teaching department/ Institute/ Constitute college has its own library where books and research journals, mainly in the respective specialized areas provided.
Some of the biggest libraries are those of Oriental College, Law College, Hailey College of Commerce and Department of Islamic Studies, Department of English and Institute of Chemistry where over 57,335, 48, 725, 36,845, 20,149, 15,738 and 13,130 books, respectively are available. In addition, these libraries also receive many periodicals and research journals. The total number of books in all the University libraries are over 13,00,000.
The Library has developed a database under the CDS/ISIS designed by the UNESCO to cater the needs of its patrons. Online public access catalogue (OPACs) terminals are available for searching. A PC cluster giving access to software packages and an Internet Lab. having 260 computers at present. There are about 5000 registered members of the lab. And the number is increasing. Approximately 100-150 students, faculty members and research scholars use the Internet service daily.
